Lawyers for Literacy is an annual fundraising campaign that engages Oregon’s legal community in supporting SMART Reading’s critical work providing books and reading support to Oregon kids. Each April, firms and individuals are invited to participate in a friendly competition to see who can raise the most money for SMART.

Through our Lawyers for Literacy campaign, participating firms and organizations support SMART and contribute to the future vitality and diversity of Oregon’s legal profession by creating stronger, more confident readers and reducing barriers of entry into a legal career.

When Does The Campaign Take Place?

Lawyers for Literacy takes place annually in the spring. In 2026, the campaign will run from Apr. 20-May 1. Click here to see this year’s online campaign!

How Do I Get Involved?

Any firms or individuals are welcome to participate! We’ve found that it works best when a firm has a Team Captain who acts as the SMART Reading advocate at their firm, sharing information, and encouraging their colleagues and their firm to make a gift and/or volunteer with SMART. To read more about the Team Captain role, click here.

We also have a Lawyers for Literacy Campaign Board that helps plan and execute the campaign annually. To learn more about this role, click here. Big thanks to our 2024-25 Campaign Board members:

  • Kelsey Benedick, Snell Wilmer
  • Alexis Pooley, Buckley Law
  • Erica Tatoian, Miller Nash
  • Kate Gallagher, Lane Powell
  • Sara Ward, Dunn Carney
  • Brandon Thornburg, Cosgrave Vergeer Kester
  • Natalie Smith, Sussman Shank
