Through SMART Reading, kids build a personal library of 14 hand-picked books each year. Books that they love and can return to again and again.
The SMART Book Challenge is our annual campaign to raise funds to purchase books for the 2020-21 school year, and we know those books (and the one-on-one reading support our volunteers provide) will be needed more urgently than ever next year.
All funds raised in the Book Challenge go to purchase giveaway books for sites in your local area for the next program year. This year’s Challenge will run from February 29 through April 12.
Your support is essential to our ability to ensure that all kids in Oregon can realize their full potential through reading.
- $40 = 14 books (books for one SMART Reading student for one year)
- $80 = 28 books (books for two SMART Reading students for one year)
The Book Challenge is also a friendly competition among SMART Reading sites to see who can get the most books into the hands of kids by donating to SMART Reading. Sites are divided by size (small and large) and the site with the highest percentages of volunteer participation in the Challenge in each category also receive an additional book giveaway day for the students in their program. Weekly updates of how your site is doing are available below!
We also invite the wider community to join in the fun! Click here for sample email and social media posts to share with your friends, families and neighbors. Donations made by non-volunteers will count toward the participation rate of the site they designate (sites will be able to receive over 100% participation).

SMART Book Challenge Results
