SMART Reading Volunteer Resources
Volunteers are the heart of SMART Reading!
SMART Reading was founded on the idea that communities should be involved in children’s education. Since our start in 1992, we have been in awe of our amazing volunteers and their generosity and commitment to building a brighter future for Oregon’s children. SMART Reading is a catalyst for bringing together engaged and concerned citizens to fundamentally change the lives of children, one hour and one book at a time. We rely on volunteers for every level of our organization’s work from leadership expertise, graphic design, office work, data entry, fundraising, event planning, onsite program implementation and supervision, and reading to students.
Our Volunteer Readers comprise our largest volunteer segment, standing 5,000 strong. These individuals commit an hour each week from mid-October to mid-May to read one-on-one with two to four children in sessions that range from 15 to 30 minutes. Nearly 60 percent of our Volunteer Readers have been volunteering for two years or more, with nearly 30 percent reading for more than five years.
Volunteer Site Coordinators
SMART Reading wouldn’t be possible without our incredibly dedicated, talented and generous group of nearly 350 volunteer Site Coordinators. These individuals commit several hours a week to oversee and implement the program on-site each week. Their commitment to providing this program to Oregon kids is truly awe-inspiring and we are so grateful for their service.
