A Message to Our Community — January 7, 2021
At SMART Reading, we are deeply committed to our vision of an Oregon where all children can realize their full potential through reading. The promise of an equitable education for all is fundamental to our work, and we rely on the democratic principles that underpin this promise.
Yesterday’s coup attempt was an assault on our democracy, its institutions, and those principles — including the peaceful transition of power — that form the backbone of our country. We stand firmly against this violent attempt to overturn the will of the people and deny the outcome of a free and fair election.
We’re committed to continuing to work towards peace, inclusivity, and justice in our communities, and to bringing Oregonians together to spark joy and opportunity through the magic of a shared book.
While the election has now been certified, the ongoing inequities and stark divisions laid bare yesterday will continue to have implications in the days and years to come. We know many grown-ups are thinking about how to have conversations with the children in their lives about these events. Here are a few resources that we’ve found useful:
