Overview of Program Offerings

Important for 2021-22 School Year: Due to ongoing safety precautions related to the pandemic, our programs are primarily virtual. We’re continuing to monitor the situation and follow the guidance of our school partners and the Oregon Department of Education when it comes to in-person programming.

We’ve developed multiple reading engagement opportunities that will be available during the 2021-22 school year. Here’s an overview of the services we’ll offer:

  • Virtual SMART: The closest option to our traditional in-person model, Virtual SMART is a personalized reading experience that connects one student with two volunteers for weekly reading sessions on Zoom or Google Meet. Students and volunteers access our Virtual Storyroom where they can select digital books to read together.
  • Classroom Read-Alouds: In order to provide reading support to as many kids as possible in the 2021-22 school year, we will offer our Classroom Read-Aloud model pairing a volunteer with a classroom for regular group read-alouds using a virtual meeting platform.
  • Pen Pal: The relationships that form between SMART Reading students and their volunteers are one of the most valuable aspects of our work. Our Pen Pal program connects kids and volunteers to exchange letters about what they are reading, providing students an enriching opportunity to practice their reading and writing skills, discover what they love to read, and collaborate using technology.
  • Standard SMART (In-person): In-person service, both for one-on-one (Standard) and Classroom Read-Aloud sessions, will be offered in specific instances where the site partner requests it and we can do so safely within our specified parameters, and following state and local health guidance.
